The Half
Mad Training Program
The Whatever
Training Program

The
Half Mad Training Program
For the past six years, the San Diego Track
Club members has been gathering in San Diego County on Saturdays
throughout the summer to train for the America’s Finest Half Marathon
in mid-August. We also gather for the Tuesday evening workouts at
Balboa Park that are led by Metro Coach Paul Greer.
Dubbed the Half Mad Half Marathon Training
by founder Stephen Burch, the program remains true to its roots as a
much smaller, low-key version of the club’s wildly popular Rockin’ ’n’
Runnin’ marathon training program. In fact, most of those who sign up
for the summer program are RnR alumni; others hope to run their first
marathon with us the following year.
Coaches Stephen Burch and Jameson
Rienick lead summer runs that take place at Lake Murray, Harbor Island,
Balboa Park, Point Loma, Pacific Beach and Coronado. The program has
its own Web site to find weekly and monthly schedules, maps and
directions to the start. Supported aid stations feature ice-cold water
and Vitalyte are provided.
The 2011 Half Mad Half
Marathon Training Program online registration opens May 15
and is expected to sell out before our opening run on
Saturday, June 11 at Road Runner Sports. This year’s fee
is $50, which includes a specially designed technical
T-shirt. Please note: it does not include the online registration fee.
There will be no on-site registration this year.
At a Glance:
- Program runs June 11 – August 20, 2011
- Fee of $50* includes a technical T-shirt,
aid station support, coaching, access to a special Web site and Tuesday
and Saturday group workouts
- Online registration only this year,
beginning May 15
- The program is capped at 150 runners

The
Whatever Training Program
For those that wish to continue with us into
the fall, or return after a summer hiatus, we have the Whatever
Training Program. Like the summer version, we’re focused on regaining
or maintaining fitness but for a wider variety of events. The same fee
and enrollment caps exist, and the program follows a similar format.
The difference is there is no singular race we train for; thus, we each
train for “whatever” we want. Could be you want to complete the Silver
Strand Half Marathon in the fall. Could be you want a couple of hours
of support while working up to a full marathon. Could be you just want
some company on your weekend runs and have no race-specific goal.
Once the weather starts to cool, we move
inland more often to run trails in Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve and
Mission Trails and San Diego Track Club fall cross-country races. The
program ends with the annual Christmas Card Lane Run in December.
At a Glance:
- Program runs Sept. 10 – December 17, 2011
- Fee of $50* includes a technical T-shirt,
aid station support, coaching, access to a special Web site and Tuesday
and Saturday group workouts
- Online registration only this year,
beginning Aug. 12
- The program is capped at 150 runners

*Non-SDTC runners will also need
to sign up for a prorated SDTC membership at registration.
